Big Wave Surfer & ESPY Female Action Athlete of the Year

When asked to describe her personality, she uses the words, "focused,” "calm,” and "passionate.” Growing up in Rio De Janeiro and the daughter of a well-known fashion designer and an iconic politician, twenty-five-year-old Maya Gabeira is the world’s most famous female big wave surfer.

She was 14 years old when she first took on surfing; her infatuation with the sport was immediate, but her ability to actually do it was not. What she did have was incredible determination, the opportunity to travel, and the ideal tow-in partner and mentor Carlos Burle. Seven years later, Maya has superseded the sport’s expectations. She has won four consecutive Billabong XXL Big Wave awards and an ESPY and she is arguably the most well rounded female big wave surfer in the world.

Maya is happiest when the waves at Waimea Beach or Teahupoo are breaking, and when she’s not hitting the ocean with her board in tow; Gabeira is passionately practicing yoga or cooking.
