Covered Wagon Tours
The covered wagon, or Conestoga wagon, is a familiar symbol of one of the most colorful and exciting chapters in American history -- the westward movement across the continent during the nineteenth century. It has been featured in many films, as well as songs like Tex Williams' Western swing The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along. Today, companies like Covered Wagon Tours enable visitors to take a trip back to that era. Visitors must make reservations.
CWT is based in the California resort town of La Quinta. Its guides drive bands of tourists through the scenic Coachella Valley Desert, where you'll find two national parks, Joshua Tree National Park and Snow-to-Sand National Monument. Tours also visit the San Andreas Fault (the cause of California's earthquakes) and the Horseshoe Palms Oasis, where you can see islands of greenery in a sea of desert.
Each night, the guides and tourists camp out in the pristine wilderness. The nightly camping fare includes roasted marshmallows, hot chocolate and cowboy coffee.
