Harlem Spirituals / New York Visions
Every Sunday and Wednesday, visitors can go on an almost six-hour Harlem Spirituals city tours. The bus tour with a live tour guide first passes the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club, and other landmarks before guests depart the bus for a worship service in either Harlem or the Bronx. After church, guests can eat a wonderful Sunday brunch at a nearby restaurant.
These tours are always conducted in English, but depending on demand, they can be conducted in German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Guests need to dress in dressy clothes for this tour, as flip flops and shorts are not allowed within the church. In addition, tourists need to respect the local congregation by not taking photos or videotaping during the service.
Tourists love to visit the old churches which once served as underground railroad stations and were home congregations to important people like Harriet Tubman. Out of respect to the current congregation, tour companies are forbidden to announce what congregation they will visit.
