About Big Island Electric Bike Company

Spotless white beaches, stunning steep mountains and abundant lush vegetation decorate the landscape of Hawaii’s Big Island—and if you ask Jason and Keely Herod, the best way to appreciate the island sights, sounds and scents is by getting out and exploring it.

In August of 2016, the duo took note of the flourishing electric bike market and launched Big Island Electric Bike Company, hoping to provide an environmentally-friendly way for visitors to access the far reaches of the island.

A Solution For Two Businesses

Before opening Big Island Electric Bikes, Jason was already renting motorcycles, vans and trucks to visitors on Hawaii via his first business on the island: Hawaiian Adventure Rentals.

He had tried an online booking system for the company but stopped using it soon after because its functionality didn’t meet his needs, and his customers weren’t using it. Ever since, he’s spent a lot of time taking bookings on his iPhone, writing things out and plugging dates into his Apple Calendar.

When he decided to start Big Island Electric Bikes, Jason knew he needed an easy way to keep track of both businesses and stay up-to-date with modern industry standards.

“A lot of rental companies offer online bookings—we didn’t want to be left behind,” he said. “We didn’t want to miss any of the market share just because we didn’t have online booking.”

When browsing the various online booking systems available, being clean and easy to use was the top requirement for the Herods.

Jason said ZOZI Advance stood out immediately. “A lot of the other systems are difficult to navigate if you’re not a computer whiz,” he said. “With ZOZI, I like the seamlessness of it—everything makes sense. All the buttons are exactly where they should be.”

Making the final decision was easy for Jason, and ZOZI’s customer service played a key role in his choice.

“ZOZI scores 100 in the customer service department,” Jason said, explaining that the ZOZI team was incredibly helpful throughout the whole process, from selling him the product, to training. “It was honestly a pretty easy decision.”

Organization: The Key To Growth

As Big Island Electric Bikes enters their first winter busy season with a fleet of 15 electric bikes, Jason and Keely are confident they’ll see success, and they’re looking forward to exploring the full suite of features ZOZI Advance has to offer.

“We kept up well enough without a system, but there was just so much potential. We had a round-about way of doing things,” Jason said. “Now I have full confidence knowing I’m not going to forget somebody or forget a booking.”

A few months into using ZOZI Advance, the simplicity of the software has still been Jason’s favorite part. He said he uses the mobile app to easily check what’s up for the day ahead.

“I pull it up at night real quick to check the next day’s status,” Jason said. He said he especially likes that the mobile app can combine both his companies into one calendar, so he can get a broad view of everything he’s got going on.

Focused On The Future

Having ZOZI keep track of the day-to-day processes of his businesses, Jason now has room to focus on new initiatives and scaling for the future.

“That’s another good thing about ZOZI: We’ve only scratched the surface of what the program can do. It’s an app we can grow into,” Jason said, noting that they hope to expand their business in their near future with their first employee, more bikes, and guided tours island-wide.

“With tons of elevation change and steep mountains, most people aren’t going to hop on a bike and climb things out here,” Jason said. “And you’re not getting the sounds and the smells of the environment if you’re riding in a car—you miss stuff. With these bikes, we really want people to get the most out of the ride.”
